Hundreds become U.S. citizens during naturalization ceremony in Rockford

September 5, 2024

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Hundreds of immigrants from 61 countries become U.S. citizens Thursday morning in Rockford.

The top ten countries represented were: Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Ukraine, India, Pakistan, Congo, Moldova, Thailand and Vietnam.

The 312 candidates packed the auditorium of the Coronado Performing Arts Center at 314 N. Main Street. Friends and family watched as they were welcomed as legal U.S. citizens. The new citizens proudly waved American flags and recited the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance and the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Honorable Margaret J. Schneider administered the Oath of Allegiance. ASM Rockford General Manager Gretchen Gilmore delivered welcoming remarks, and U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen congratulated the new citizens.

“The first naturalization ceremony I did was one of the first things I did as a member of Congress,” said Rep. Sorensen (IL-17). “I remember writing my remarks and getting up there on stage and closing my book. I wrote the remarks before I could feel it. So today it’s about talking about how we feel.”

Naturalization ceremonies normally take place at notable locations to celebrate the conclusion of an immigrant’s journey to citizenship and honor the commitment they have shown along the way.

Maritza Vera took part in the ceremony. Her family was right by her side through the whole process.

“If anyone out there wants to do this, do not hesitate. Look for help and get information that they need to do. This is the best decision that any immigrant here in the United States can make,” said Vera.
