Congressman Eric Sorensen Meets with Educators to Discuss Federal Funding, Classroom Challenges

ROCKFORD, IL – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) met with educators from across Illinois’ 17th District this week for a roundtable discussion focused on the future of federal education funding and the challenges facing local schools.
Teachers and education leaders shared concerns about funding uncertainty and the impact of federal cuts on students and staff. Educators discussed recent reductions to after-school programs, projected budget shortfalls in several districts, growing class sizes, and ongoing difficulties recruiting and retaining teachers—especially in special education.
“Our teachers are being asked to do more with less, and our students are paying the price,” said Congressman Sorensen. “When after-school programs are cut, when class sizes grow, when students are too afraid to come to school, that is not a system that’s working. Our kids deserve stability. They deserve support. And our educators deserve a federal partner that listens and shows up for them.”
Participants also raised concerns about how immigration enforcement activity in communities is affecting students, with some districts reporting increases in absences during enforcement actions. Educators described how fear and uncertainty can impact students’ ability to focus and feel safe at school.
Sorensen discussed his support for protecting the Department of Education, increasing teacher pay, strengthening recruitment and retention efforts, and ensuring schools receive the federal funding they were promised.
The roundtable was closed to the press to allow for an open and candid conversation.
