Congressman Sorensen totes new tax dollars for Central Illinois

March 13, 2024

Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) announced via news release over $123 million in tax dollars coming to Central Illinois for upcoming infrastructure projects.

"Central Illinois is a special place, and it is my job to make sure my neighbors can live and grow a family in communities that are sustainable for future generations. One of the ways I can make sure that happens is by bringing tax dollars back home to support middle-class families. By working across the aisle, I was able to secure over $123 million for Central Illinois to upgrade our river infrastructure to grow our economy, build more housing that working families can afford, and make our neighborhoods safer through rebuilding broken sidewalks, sewers, and more. I am grateful to our local partners who helped advocate for these investments that will have a positive impact on the lives of so many of our neighbors."

Infrastructure Improvements along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers

$120 million in the FY2024 House Energy and Water Appropriations bill will support The Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program (NESP).

The money will go towards upgraded outdated locks along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers that will make river navigation more efficient Illinois commerce.

Affordable Housing in Peoria

$500,000 will go towards new affordable single-family homes in the Peoria area, specifically the 61605 ZIP Code area. Sorenson hopes increasing homeownership will build generational wealth and strengthen existing neighborhoods.

Sewer Infrastructure Upgrades in Bloomington

$2 million will go towards new sanitary sewers and water mains while separating combined sewers into separate sewage systems.

The project aims to decrease the number of overflows, sewer backups, and flooding for private and public bodies of water.

Sidewalk Upgrades in Peoria

$500,000 will go towards outdated sidewalks in Peoria to improve the walkability where Peorians rely on walking or public transit.

Water Main Replacement for Peoria Heights

$959,752 will go towards water infrastructure in Peoria Heights. The upgrades will help provide safe drinking water to residents and promote equity between sections of the community separated by the Illinois River Bluffs.
