McLean County man gets $25,000 tax refund through congressional constituent services

April 11, 2024

With tax season around the corner, there’s one resource you may not be familiar with: your U.S. Congress member.

The Internal Revenue Service help is handled by the constituent services department at every congressional office.

Roger Hougham, a retired Marine and a farmer from McLean County, said he had been trying to get a $22,250 refund from the IRS for more than three years.

He had just about given up, but then his accountant suggested he contact the office of U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen.

“I was at the end, I figured the money was gone, sayonara, out the door. Some guy in South Dakota is spending my money,” said Hougham.

Within 30 days, he received a check for $24,876 in hand, including $2,641 in interest. He even got a letter from the IRS confirming the error.

“They did admit that they had dropped the ball. So, got my money and I’m very appreciative of the congressman’s effort,” he said.

Tax Day is Monday, April 15.
