Sorensen introduces AI Robocall legislation

January 29, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC (WMBD)– Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) announced bipartisan legislation targeting AI robocalls along with Congressman Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06) according to a news release.

Introduced as the Quashing Unwanted and Interruptive Electronic Telecommunications (QUIET) Act, the bill would require robocalls to disclose uses of AI technology and increase penalties for people using AI to impersonate others with intent to cause harm or defraud.

“These scammers are getting better at tricking seniors and working families into handing over billions of dollars in theft each year,” said Sorensen.

He continued, “My QUIET Act cracks down on bad actors using technology to impersonate human voices, so we can better protect our neighbors and loved ones. To keep Americans safe, we need to stay one step ahead of these criminals.”

The bill is part of a larger package sponsored by House Committee on Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone called the Do Not Disturb Act, which also combats unwanted calls and texts.
