Sorenson visits border on behalf of mother who’s daughter died of fentanyl overdose

April 29, 2024

Illinois Congressman Eric Sorenson (D) made a trip down to the Mexican border with five other representatives as part of a bipartisan fact-finding mission.

The trip was said to address four points: Mexico, as the U.S.’ largest trade partner; the establishment of legal migration into the country; taking care of individuals seeking asylum; and addressing drug smuggling and human trafficking.

Sorenson said the volume and danger of fentanyl being distributed in the United States has made drugs crossing the border a critical issue.

“When I was there and I saw all of these instances, where I was being told about how the fentanyl is coming across the border, I was thinking about our constituent named Brenda who is here in Rock Island, who called the office and I talked with her because her own daughter passed away from a fentanyl overdose, and she said ‘Congressman, we have to do more,'” she said.

Sorenson said he would push for legislation to add more patrols and technology to the border to combat drugs and human trafficking.
