ICYMI: Sorensen Secures Funding for Police in Winnebago County

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) secured nearly $847,000 for a new state-of-the-art police training center in Winnebago County to support officers in Northern Illinois and reduce crime.
“Our police work on strained budgets and need more support to do their jobs effectively,” said Sorensen. “I’m proud to have secured tax dollars to fund the police through equipment for a new training center in Winnebago County that will help prepare, recruit, and retain police officers in Northern Illinois. This center will provide our officers with the high-quality resources they need to reduce crime and keep our communities safe.”
“This funding will allow Winnebago County to operate a state-of-the-art police training facility that is unmatched in our region,” said Winnebago County Board Chairman Joseph Chiarelli. “Investing in the quality training of our law enforcement will not only strengthen retention, but attract new recruits. Providing this scenario-based education will result in properly trained officers who are well-equipped to serve and protect our community. I thank Congressman Sorensen for his support of this project.”
Sorensen secured $846,910 for equipment for a new police training center in Winnebago County that will provide real-world simulation training to officers in local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The federal investment will provide officers with the training equipment they need to do be prepared for their jobs and will improve the relationship between police and the communities they serve.
Sorensen worked across the aisle to request and secure this funding in the FY2024 Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations bill that is now law. Sorensen worked with local leaders to secure this investment as part of the Community Project Funding process, which allows members of Congress to receive funding for critical initiatives in their communities.
