Sorensen Announces Funding to Strengthen Illinois Nuclear Energy

March 15, 2023

MOLINE, IL – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced grants that are now available to strengthen Central and Northwestern Illinois’ nuclear power industry. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Civil Nuclear Credit (CNC) Program is accepting applications for awards that will prevent reactors from having to close prematurely, supporting our communities’ energy needs and creating good-paying, sustainable jobs.

"Investments in our nuclear energy sector lower energy costs for Illinoisans working families," said Sorensen. “I’m working to make sure that funding opportunities to support Illinois’ nuclear power stations, from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and elsewhere, come back to our region to keep our homes and businesses powered sustainably.”

This is the second round of the CNC Program’s application process. Awards are open to owners or operators of nuclear reactors that are at risk of closure by the end of the award’s four-year period. If you would like to request a letter of support, please contact Congressman Sorensen’s Rock Island office at (309) 786-3406.

Illinois is the top nuclear-energy producer in North America, generating more electricity from nuclear energy than any other state. Nuclear reactors support energy independence by providing clean, resilient, and affordable power for homes and businesses across our region.

Congressman Eric Sorensen is the first openly LGBTQ person elected to represent Illinois at the federal level and is a member of the New Democrat Coalition. He serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Prior to serving in Congress, Sorensen was a local meteorologist in Rockford and the Quad Cities for nearly 20 years. His district includes Illinois’ Quad Cities, Rockford, Peoria, and Bloomington-Normal.
