Sorensen Applauds Proposed Guidance on Clean Fuels Production Credit, a Win for Illinois Farmers

January 17, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) issued the following statement after the Department of Treasury released their proposed guidance for the Clean Fuels Production Credit (45Z), a critical step in supporting Illinois farmers, lowering transportation costs, and investing in sustainable fuel sources:

“This is a big win for Illinois farmers and our entire region. I’ve been proud to work across the aisle to push for this guidance because it means more dollars in Illinois farmers’ pockets, lower transportation costs, and a stronger, more sustainable future for Central and Northwestern Illinois. By unlocking new opportunities for ethanol and biodiesel producers, this credit will help our family farmers and rural communities thrive while also supporting energy sources of the future, like sustainable aviation fuel.

I’ll keep working to make sure our producers and biofuel industries can take full advantage of this credit to grow our economy and support hardworking families right here at home.

The Clean Fuels Production Credit incentivizes the production of low-emission transportation fuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other biofuels. This tax credit directly benefits Illinois farmers by expanding markets for corn and soybeans used to make biofuels.

This follows a bipartisan push by Sorensen and 52 other lawmakers urging the Treasury Department to issue the guidance quickly and to expand the definition of farming practices eligible for the 45Z tax credit.
