Sorensen, Durbin, Duckworth Press DHS for Transparency on Rockford Courthouse Fence

September 8, 2025

ROCKFORD, IL – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17), alongside U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, sent a formal letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) demanding transparency about the sudden installation of fencing around the U.S. District Court for Northern Illinois in Rockford.

The lawmakers are pressing DHS for details about the purpose of the fencing, how much it cost, how long it will remain in place, and whether local or state officials were notified in advance.

“This fence went up without warning or explanation, and Rockford residents deserve to know why. We need to make sure federal actions in our community are transparent, lawful, and respectful of the people who live here.” said Congressman Sorensen. “Whether it’s protecting our neighborhoods or holding federal agencies accountable, I will always fight for honest answers and open communication for the neighbors I represent.”

The letter also raises broader concerns about whether Rockford should expect an increased presence of federal immigration officers, noting the community’s right to clarity and accountability from the federal government.
