Sorensen Statement on Vote to Avert a Government Shutdown

October 2, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) released the following statement on his vote to avert a government shutdown.

“I voted today to keep the government open, giving Congress 45 more days to find a bipartisan solution to fund the government,” said Sorensen. “I also worked to remove a clause that would have increased pay for members of Congress. A government shutdown would have been terrible for working families in Central and Northwestern Illinois. I am glad that commonsense prevailed and the extreme agenda that would have hurt our economy was defeated. As we move forward, I will continue to work will my colleagues, Democrats and Republicans, to support our middle-class families in Illinois.”

Congressman Eric Sorensen is the first openly LGBTQ person elected to represent Illinois at the federal level and is a member of the New Democrat Coalition. He serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Prior to serving in Congress, Sorensen was a local meteorologist in Rockford and the Quad Cities for nearly 20 years. His district includes Illinois’ Quad Cities, Rockford, Peoria, and Bloomington-Normal.
