Sorensen Tours Freeport, Highlights Clean Drinking Water Efforts

August 8, 2023

Visit Comes After Sorensen Secured the Inclusion of Nearly $1 Million in House Interior Appropriations Bill for Freeport Water Infrastructure

FREEPORT, IL – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17), Freeport Mayor Jodi Miller, and other local officials toured the newly constructed Freeport Well House and viewed the Adams Avenue Reconstruction project to highlight efforts to improve local infrastructure and expand clean drinking water access.

“In Washington, I worked across the aisle to secure the inclusion of nearly $1 million in the House Interior Appropriations Bill to support water infrastructure in Freeport,” said Sorensen. “I was excited to visit Freeport to discuss this recent news and see firsthand how they are working to improve water quality and lower costs for working families. I’ll continue working with local partners in Freeport to ensure residents do not get left behind.”

“It was an honor to show Congressman Sorensen around our new water treatment facility and road projects,” said Freeport Mayor Jodi Miller. “Infrastructure improvements are one of our highest priority in Freeport, and we were excited to show him the scope and context of ongoing projects. We’re thankful that he continues to fight for us in D.C. to secure funding for these critical needs.”

The visit comes as Sorensen works to help fund a new Well #11 and Well #12 to replace wells shut down due to contamination. Last month, Sorensen announced the inclusion of $959,752 for the project in a FY2024 House Interior Appropriations Bill.

The funding was requested by Sorensen as part of the Community Project Funding process, which allows members of Congress to secure funds for critical initiatives in their communities. If passed by the full House and Senate, the funding would help bring the community’s water supply back to its original levels and safely connect residents to clean drinking water.

Sorensen also visited the Adams Avenue reconstruction site, where new sewers and water systems are being built.

Congressman Eric Sorensen is the first openly LGBTQ person elected to represent Illinois at the federal level and is a member of the New Democrat Coalition. He serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Prior to serving in Congress, Sorensen was a local meteorologist in Rockford and the Quad Cities for nearly 20 years. His district includes Illinois’ Quad Cities, Rockford, Peoria, and Bloomington-Normal.
