Sorensen Brings Astronaut to Schools in Northwestern Illinois

Hearing from an astronaut that the earth looks like a blue marble from space can make a first-grader's day.

U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen, D-Illinois, visited Moline this week with an out-of-this-world guest: NASA astronaut Kate Rubins.

The two hosted a forum at Black Hawk College on Wednesday night, then stopped Thursday morning at Hamilton Elementary School, aiming to "inspire the next generation" of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professionals.

Former meteorologist who campaigned on climate science, Democratic U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen, IL-17, will serve on a science committee in the 118th Congress.

The Science, Space, and Technology committee oversees agency budgets that total over $42 billion and its jurisdiction covers most non-defense and non-human-health Federal research and development.

"I will use my experience as a meteorologist to craft policies that will mitigate the negative impact extreme weather is having on our communities," Sorensen said.

Residents, schools, and organizations in Illinois’ 17th Congressional District are invited to create handmade Valentine’s cards and deliver them to Rep Sorensen’s district office in Rock Island starting on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, through Thursday, February 9, 2023, at 5PM CT. Once received, Valentines will be distributed to veterans across Illinois’ 17th Congressional District.

Lawmakers representing the Quad-Cities participated in the hour forum, being asked questions about business and economic growth, attracting and retaining people, and building a community where people want to live and work.
